  • Are you interested in volunteering during Alexandria Earth Day?  Great!  Take a look at the list of opportunities below and once you have chosen an activity, click here to contact the Earth Day Committee and indicate your name, telephone number, and the activity and time you prefer.  Final assignments and instructions will be sent via email in mid-April. 

    As a thank you, all volunteers will receive an Earth Day t-shirt or tote bag.  The shirts are made from 100% post consumer PET (soda bottles) materials.  Very Earth friendly!

    All assignments take place at the same date and location:

    Location:   Ben Brenman Park, 4800 Brenman Park Drive. 
    Rain Location: Samuel W. Tucker School, 435 Ferdinand Day Drive
    Date:    Saturday April 26th, 2008
       
       
    Activity 1:    Recycling & Reuse Roundup Volunteers
    Time:   9:30 AM to 2:30 PM
    Volunteers Needed:   10-15 (2 to 3 per one hour)
    Description:      Volunteers will be assisting organizations involved in the Recycling and Reuse Round-up who will be collecting a variety of recyclable and reusable items including, but not limited to: electronics, clothing, linens, shoes, microwaves, baby strollers, tools, pots& pans, tires, latex paint, books, books on tape, DVDs, printer cartridges, and personal records and documents for shredding and recycling. Some heavy lifting may be involved.
       
       
    Activity 2: Event Recycling Volunteers
    Time: 9:30 AM to 2:30 PM
    Volunteers Needed:   5-10 (1 to 2 per one hour)
    Job Description: Volunteers will be responsible for assisting the City's Recycling Coordinator with
    onsite management of event recycling and waste. Volunteers will help educate participants about what can and can be recycled or composted and directing them to the appropriate bins. They will also assist with pulling full bags of recyclables and compostables and transporting them to the appropriate truck for recovery. Some heavy lifting may be involved.
       
       
    Activity 3:  Earth Day Event Set-Up Volunteers
    Time:      7 AM to 10 AM
    Volunteers Needed: 6 (two per hour)
    Job Description: Set up tables and chairs for exhibitors and vendors.  Distribute supplies and other event information to exhibitors.
       
       
    Activity 4:   Earth Day Traffic Flow Attendants
    Time:   10 AM to 2 PM
    Volunteers Needed:   8 (two per hour)
    Job Description: Direct traffic to approved parking areas.
       
       
    Project 5:  Earth Day Event Break-Down Volunteers
    Time:    2 PM to 3 PM
    Volunteers Needed: 3
    Job Description: Breakdown tables and chairs and help City staff load tables/chairs into trucks.  Help exhibitors breakdown their exhibits and load their vehicles.
