Last Year's Celebration

  • See the photos from Alexandria Earth Day 2008

  • Alexandria Earth Day and Arbor Day 2008 was a huge success!  Over 1,300 people attending this year’s celebration at Ben Brenman Park on Saturday, April 26th from 10 AM to 2 PM.  Last year’s theme was Alexandria: What’s YOUR Footprint? and activities focused on how citizens can reduce their environmental footprints.  Special thanks to Bates Trucking, Chesterfield Farms and Covanta, Inc. for helping us achieve a zero-waste event.  Also, all compostable food service containers and reusable tote bags were purchased through CarrotSeed, located in Alexandria.

    Activities and exhibitors included:

    • Arbor Day Tree Sale: 225 trees sold, the most ever sold!
Over the next ten years, those trees will sequester 1,890 lbs of carbon from the air each year; and twenty-five years from now, they will sequester 4,050 lbs (2 tons!) of carbon from the Alexandria air!

    • Performance by Blue Sky Puppets

    • Live music from The Road and the TC Williams Jazz Combo

    • Food by Food Matters and Tempo Restaurants

    • The presentation of the Draft Environmental Charter from the Environmental Policy Commission to City Council. (For more information, click here)
